Edu Shapes – Tow – Big Waves
Crafting these boards over the years has been a rewarding and genuinely exhilarating experience. One key concept, particularly in significant waves, involves using them when traditional paddling out is not feasible. With advancements in technique and top surfers towing, there’s a growing desire for replicating similar maneuvers on big waves as seen in smaller ones. Achieving this objective allows surfers to make the most of the conditions and the immense waves.
In 2018, alongside Joao Macedo, António Silva, Alemão de Maresias, Chumbo, and now with Ivo Cação, I delved into this approach, absorbing insights and dropping in to some serious bombs in Nazare to learn first hand. This experience significantly aided my understanding of board performance, diverse technologies, and, most importantly, receiving real-time feedback from the team.
Depending on the conditions, I tow boards ranging from 3.5kg to 11kg for Nazaré tow-ins, each with specific measurements tailored to the intended use.
